WHY IMPORT EXPORT(IE) CODE

IMPORT EXPORT CODE (IEC) is a ten digit number granted by Directorate General of Foreign Trade under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to any bonafide person/ company for carrying out import/export. An IEC is necessary to obtain before you start an Import or Export of goods. In case of Import/Export of Services/Technology,IEC is only required in specified Services/ Specified Technology. These Specified Services/ Technology includes that trade which are restricted by the Government of India as they pertain to National Security, such as dealings in nuclear weapons, automatic guns etc.

IE Code application must be made to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade along with the necessary supporting documents. Once, the application is submitted, DGFT will issue the IE Code for the entity in 15 – 20 working days or less.

The exceptions are: 1. Import/ Export of Goods/ services for personal Consumption. 2. Import/ Export of Goods/ services by Government ministries and departments, and certain notified Charitable Institutions.
The procedure is: a. An application must be made in Aayaat Niryaat Form 2A (ANF 2A) format to the regional authority of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade(DGFT) in the region where the registered office of the Company is situated. b. The form must be accompanied with Following details:
Applicant seeking modification in their IEC will be required to submit all documents as required in e-IEC. The requisite documents are as listed at List of documents required to be uploaded along with the application form. Further, in cases where applicant is opting for option Modify your e-IEC, the applicant is required to submit only that document which is corresponding to the change required by him. The requisite documents are as listed at List of documents required to be uploaded along with the application form. In case of any change/modification in these documents, applicant is requested to update/attach the required documents wherein he seeks a change/modification.

Yes, PAN is mandatory. Self Certified Photocopy of PAN card has to be submitted along with the application.
No. But where PAN card details are not shown on INCOME TAX website, it may be requested to show original PAN card for verification.
Only one IEC would be issued against a single PAN number. Any proprietor can have only one IEC number and in case there are more than one IECs allotted to a proprietor, the same may be surrendered to the Regional Office for cancellation. ** In case of more than one proprietorship firm belonging to one proprietor, they will be indicated as branch offices of the first firm.
