HSN code on the GST
Products under GST are classified by the Harmonized System of Labeling (HSN) code. There are various types of products and services. The common tax rate does not apply to all of them. Thus, they are classified into small groups and apply to specific GST rate groups. Services are classified based on the Service Accounting Code (SAC). A person can search for the tax rate associated with a particular HSN code on the GST portal. However, It is not necessary to be a registered user of the GST portal.
HSN code on the GST portal
GST taxpayers earning more than Rs.5 crore in the previous financial year were required to provide a 6-digit HSN code (Harmonization System of labeling code). It comes into effect from April 1.
This applies to the SAC on the invoice given for the provision of taxable goods and services. Taxpayers with a turnover of up to Rs 5 crore in the previous financial year are required to provide a 4-digit HSN code on the B2B invoice. Previously, the need was 4 digits and 2 digits respectively.
HSN codes for 6-digit products are universal. Hence, common HSN codes apply to customs and GST. Accordingly, the codes recommended in the tariff are also used for GST purposes. In customs fees, HS code is recommended as title (4 digits HS), sub-title (6 digits HS), and tariff items (8 digits).
These documents can be accessed on the CBIC website. The GST rate table for goods and services can also be accessed on the website.
